Update(s): 03/15/2024 11:12:14 AM - Per the United States Coast Guard, the spill was the result of operator error, and the feed pump was not turned off. The spill was actively releasing from 0000 midnight until 0124 in the morning on 03/15/2024. The incident occurred approximately 30 nautical miles northwest of Fort Bragg. It is secured, and there is no residual sheen. The ship will pull into Schneider dock today. Based on the 500 gallons of diesel, it would evaporate in about 18 hours in 2 ½ miles. A contingency spill estimate would evaporate in 21 hours in about 3 ½ miles. They did not deploy booms. They were maintaining their 10-knot speed. The did not have adequate tools or lighting to clean up the spill. Because of the trajectory of the wind and current, they determined that there was zero possibility that the spill would impact the shoreline. |
