Orignal Description: Per Reporting Party : There is possibly an active fire at a lithium battery energy storage facility. There is visible smoke coming from a battery storage enclosure that is an approximately 20 foot by 8 foot metal enclosure; similar to a conex box. There are 528 LG lithium ion batteries are stored inside - total weight of all batteries is : 103,134 pounds. The enclosure is closed off; there is visible light grey smoke coming out of the enclosure. Kern County Fire Department is on scene. They are assessing the scene and appear to be taking a defensive stance. The enclosure has an internal fire suppression system that has been activated. The immediate area involving just the battery storage facility has been evacuated of employees (less than 10 employees). There have been no injuries. The reporting party was notified of the incident at 1611 hours. The specific area (E-2) of this site (Edwards Solar Facility) has approximately 35 separate battery storage enclosures spaced about 20 feet apart. Per reporting this is a remote area with no nearby residences or businesses. Responsible party will handle any clean up and contact a contractor if necessary. | ||||||
