Orignal Description:Per reporting party: In a UPRR yard, there is a BNSF rail car with a cracked tank leaking acid at a rate of 5 gallons per minute. Impacts to the line and cleanup plans are unknown. This came in as a 911 call from a citizen and is Incident number 999. | ||||||
Update(s): 10/31/2024 07:16:10 PM - Per the reporting party: This is not a BNSF Rail Car. ; 11/01/2024 10:59:48 AM - Reporting Party with Union Pacific Railroad called back with an update: "The release stopped at 1738 on 10/31/24. A magnetic patch on the rail car tank was used to stop the release. The main line was re-opened at 1830 on 10/31/24. On 11/1/24 at 0555 the magnetic patch that had been applied to the tank car to stop the release developed a slow drip. This new release is contained and has not worsen since it started at 0555. The new drip release is not affecting train traffic." ; 11/01/2024 12:04:41 PM - Per the NRC Report Update : "Caller reported a release of approximately 3000 gallons of hydrochloric acid from tank car UTLX130094. Caller stated it is unknown if the car was attached to a train. Caller stated the exact cause of the release is unknown." Remedial Actions: "A patch was placed on the car to secure the release, however patch is still developing a slow drip. Containment has been placed under the car." Grade Crossing: NO Location Subdivision: RIVER EAST BANK Railroad Milepost: 483.54 ---RAILROAD INFORMATION--- Railroad Involved: UNION PACIFIC RAILROAD Train Number: UTLX130094 Train Type: RAIL CAR Train Direction: Additional from Union Pacific Railroad: "A Union Pacific Hazmat Manager was scene yesterday and continues to monitor; a 30 foot diameter circle of released product was around the base of the tank car on the ballast. A containment area was set up around the tank car and the remaining material in tank car was transloaded into 3 semi truck tankers yesterday. Crews on site are determining if removing a rail to access the ballast and soil will be necessary. No waterways were impacted. A Contractor continues to remediate on scene. At 1055 today a sample of the release was taken indicating a PH of "1"; sampling is on-going. This occurred at a the 4th street rail yard. The affected rail tank car was moved to be isolated by itself to a "savage lead"." |
