Orignal Description:Per the reporting party: A concerning methane release has been detected in the sewer system, originating from an unknown location. Testing at the intersection of Bay Shore Drive and Peninsula Street has shown methane levels reaching 50% of the lower explosive limit (LEL), prompting urgent safety measures. In response, authorities have initiated evacuations in the affected area, spanning from Greenlock Lane to Monmouth Street and from Harbor Boulevard to the Pacific Ocean. This precautionary action is impacting at least 300 residents, many of whom report detecting a distinct methane odor emanating from their bathrooms. As the situation unfolds, emergency personnel are working to identify the source of the leak and ensure the safety of the community. | ||||||
Update(s): 09/19/2024 01:27:09 PM - Per reporting party, the evacuation area included only a few residents on Bay Shore Drive. A nearby school is preparing to evacuate as well. The plan is to right now is to shelter in place. A decision will be made at 3 PM after conducting a test to determine whether to continue sheltering in place or to evacuate additional residents. ; 09/19/2024 03:13:28 PM - Per the NRC report: "Caller is reporting there is an unknown chemical odor in the air. Caller states that there is a pipeline nearby the area that could have the release but that is not confirmed. Caller stated that everyone in the area had to be evacuated.
