Orignal Description:The reporting party states, during a routine inspection of the flow rate, they observed a significant leakage of approximately 1000 gallons on the ground. Immediately they shut down the 24-inch main line and initiated cleanup procedures using absorbent materials. The sewage impacted a grassy area near the airport before entering the Goleta Slough, with potential further dispersion into the ocean.

SITUATION UPDATE:
Update: corrected spelling of company name. Correct spelling in Goleta West Sanitary District.

Update Description: Reporting party states spill was discovered by an inspection of the 24-inch forcemain (not routine inspection), after a significant leakage was discovered. Immediately mainline was shut down and cleanup was initiated. No absorbent material was used. Sewage was vacuumed by sewer cleaning truck and by hand. Samples were collected for E-Coli and ammonia testing. Sewage impacted a grassy area near SBA runway 33L before entering the Goleta Slough, and ultimately into the Pacific Ocean.

Updated amount: Initial amount was 30,000 gallons, not 1,000 gallons as reported in initial report. Amount as of right now it is estimated at 500,000 gallons of waste water. It is located at Southwest corner of 33L runway. Recovery of sewage is estimated at 18,800 gallons.
