Orignal Description:Per the reporting party, the listed sewage release was an estimate based on calculations. Due to 14 inches of rain since 11/20/2024, and a mechanical control failure, Lift Station Number 3, did not operate properly, and the pumps were not operating. This caused the sewage overflow on 11/22/2024 at 0200 until 0800 in the morning. The overflow impacted a storm drain which empties into the Pacific Ocean. The overflow has been stopped, but it was unrecoverable.

SITUATION UPDATE:
Release due to a Storm Surge, per the NRC Report, the caller reported that on 11/22 at 0200, automatic controls for lift station #3 in Gualala failed which caused the pumps not to turn on. This caused an estimated 99,000 gallons of raw sewage to discharge to a storm drain 15 feet to the west of the lift station, and then into the Pacific Ocean. It has not been determined what caused the automatic controls to fail, however from Wednesday to Friday morning they received 14 inches of rain. It is unknown if the water supply is contaminated. The environmental impact is unknown. The reporting party was notified of the overflow at 0700, arrived on-scene at 0800 and turned both pumps on by hand and manually pumped the station down. Currently using a float to control a backup generator which turns the pump on and off. Type of Fixed Object: Sewage Treatment Facility. Body of Water: Storm Drain/ Pacific Ocean.
