g. DESCRIPTION: Per the reporting party, a pipe on the ship caused the spill, but the cause is under investigation. The fuel went into the water of San Diego Bay. A pipe on board the vessel broke and fuel went into a drain on the ship then into the bay. Continental Maritime of San Diego is cleaning up the spill. They deployed booms and oil absorbent pads into the bay.


Per the NRC report, the caller stated a CDG 63 vessel is discharging between 30-50 gallons of diesel fuel from an unknown pipe in the vessel. The caller stated approximately 10 gallons has discharged into San Diego Bay. The cause of the discharge is unknown. The vessel name is STECHEM, number 63, and it is a military vessel. Absorbents and a boom have been applied. All the valves on the vessel have been secured.
