Orignal Description:A Boeing Ch-47 Chinook stationed at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar had a controlled landing on the west side of Hwy 5 at Red Beach. This controlled landing caused 10,000 gallons of JP5 to release onto the beach and caught fire. No waterways were reported to be affected. No injuries. This release has been stopped but not contained. A contractor will perform the cleanup.

SITUATION UPDATE:
Per NRC: The caller reported that on 12/20/24 a utility dual rotor Chinook helicopter was training over red beach at camp Pendleton, when for unknown reasons the helicopter needed to perform an emergency landing and caught fire. The caller states the cause of the fire is unknown at this time. The caller reported that 10,000 gallons of either JP-5 or JP-8 burned in the fire, and there is a possibility that some of that material may have impacted sand/soil. It is unknown to the caller if any material impacted the pacific ocean. There were no injuries or fatalities as a result of this incident. Provost Marshal's Office (PMO) Military Police were on-site, and the Camp Pendleton fire department responded to the fire. The cost in damages is unknown at this time. Caller reported that the fire was still smoldering this morning.
