g. DESCRIPTION: Per the reporting party, at 0940 this morning, the Martinez Refining Company experienced a flaring event, and the flaring event ended at 1026. Currently, they do not know the exact amount of sulfur dioxide that was released, but they did exceed the reportable quantity. The refinery experienced a process upset which lead to the flaring event which caused release of greater than 500 lbs of sulfur dioxide into the atmosphere. State and Local Agencies have been notified. The Martinez Refining Company activated a community alert. The incident was managed internally by the Martinez Refining Company. The incident has ended.

Per the NRC report, the caller reported that, due to a process upset, a flaring event occurred at their refinery. This caused a release of more than (500) pounds of sulfur dioxide into the atmosphere, but the total amount released is unknown. The caller reported that the compressor that caused the process
upset was brought on-line, which ended the flaring event.
